What is the Clip List?

In the Clip List you can manage your file, history or snippets clips.

Where to find?

You can find the Clip List on the top-right side of the main window.

You can hide or unhide the Clip List: Menu > View > Show Clip List (⌘1)

File Clips

When you select a folder in the browser list, all files in this folder will be displayed.

When you double click on a:

  • Clip Manager 3 or 4 file: the file will be opened in Clip Manager
  • Clip Manager 3 Custom Function file (XMCF): Clip Manager asks to convert it to the new XMFN format of FileMaker Pro 11.
  • Clip Manager 2 or older (.xml extension): Clip Manager asks to convert the file to the Clip Manager 4 file format.
  • Other file types: the file will be opened by the default application. Same as open a file in the Finder

Tip: You can also store your FileMaker files in your Clip Manager projects folder and open them directly from within Clip Manager.

Converting older clip files

When Clip Manager converts an older clip to the new Clip Manager 4 file format, a new folder with the current timestamp is created in the folder "Converted clips". The original files are copied to this folder.

When you double click on an older Clip Manager file, Clip Manager asks to convert the file. You can choose to always convert these files in the future without asking. This preference can be changed in the preferences window > Advanced > Always convert older Clip Manager files.

Drag and drop

The file list supports a couple of drag and drop actions.

  • You can drag a file from the list to a folder to the browser list to move or copy a file.
  • You can drag a file outside Clip Manager to the Finder to move or copy the file.
  • You can drag a file from the Finder to the Clip Manager list to move or copy the file.
  • You can drag a clip file to the history or snippets to create copy of the clip in the history or snippets section.
  • You can drag any kind of Clip in Clip Manager to the list to move, create of copy the clip. These include:
    • The current loaded clip (from the icon in the Clip Info)
    • The current selection in the Clip View

Command Description
Open Open or launch the selected file.
Set FileMaker Clipboard Set the content of the clip file into the clipboard without opening the file in Clip Manager.
Reveal Reveal the file in the Finder
Duplicate Duplicate the selected file.
Make Alias Make alias of the selected folder.
Delete Move the selected file to the trash.
Rename Rename the current file.
Refresh Refresh the list. In rare occasions you will need this. When a folder has been changed outside Clip Manager, Clip Manager is notified by the operating system.


History Clips

When you select 'History' or a smart folder in the history section in the browser list, all of the corresponding history clips will be displayed.

When you double click on a history clip, the history clip is opened in Clip Manager.

Drag and drop

The history list supports a couple of drag and drop actions.

  • You can drag a clip or multiple clips from the list to a folder of the browser list to create a file(s).
  • You can drag a clip outside Clip Manager to the Finder to create a file.
  • You can drag a clip to the snippets section to create a copy of the clip.
  • You can drag any kind of Clip in Clip Manager to the list to move, create of copy the clip. These include:
    • The current loaded clip (from the icon in the Clip Info)
    • The current selection in the Clip View

Command Description
Open Open the selected clip in Clip Manager.
Set FileMaker Clipboard Set the content of the clip into the clipboard without opening the file in Clip Manager.
Mark > As Read/Unread Mark the selected clip(s) as read/unread.
Mark > As Favorite/Unfavorite Mark the selected clip(s) as favorite/unfavorite.
Duplicate Duplicate the selected clip.
Delete Delete the selected clip(s).
Export Export the selected clip(s) to a file/files.
Refresh Refresh the list.


Snippets Clips

When you select 'Snippets' or a folder in the snippets section in the browser list, all of the corresponding snippets clips will be displayed.

When you double click on a snippets clip, the snippets clip is opened in Clip Manager.

Double click in the name column to give a snippet a meaningful name.

Drag and drop

The snippets list supports a couple of drag and drop actions.

  • You can drag a clip or multiple clips from the list to a folder of the browser list to create a file(s).
  • You can drag a clip outside Clip Manager to the Finder to create a file.
  • You can drag a clip to the history section to create a copy of the clip.
